Quick Summary
Quick summary: We tested 9 GPS trackers and related solutions for dogs. Tractive DOG 6 (EUR 69 + EUR 84/year) wins for real-time GPS in Europe — 4G/LTE coverage, 14-day battery, geofencing. For a no-subscription budget option, Apple AirTag (EUR 39) is cheapest, though it is not a true GPS. The big nuance: GPS tells you where your dog is, not how they feel. For dogs that mostly stay home or in the yard, a health monitor is often more valuable than real-time location.
Important for EU buyers: Tractive has stronger European 4G/LTE coverage than Fi (American). SpotOn GPS Fence (USD 1,295) and Halo Collar 5 are primarily US-market products — check EU network compatibility before buying. Apple AirTag and Samsung SmartTag work everywhere but are not true trackers.
Camicoo is intentionally not a GPS tracker — we measure health (temperature, activity, sleep) and anti-bark behaviour. For owners who want both: combine Tractive (GPS) with Camicoo (health).

Decision guide: which solution suits you?
Path 1 — Real-time location: Choose Tractive DOG 6 (EUR 69 + EUR 84/year). Best 4G coverage in Europe, 14-day battery, geofencing, instant alerts on escape.
Path 2 — Budget-only, dog mostly stays home: Choose Apple AirTag (EUR 39, one-time) or Samsung SmartTag 2 (EUR 35). Works as a safety net in urban areas with many iPhones/Samsungs around.
Path 3 — Health more important than location: Choose Camicoo (EUR 59.95 Waker + EUR 5.49/month). Temperature, activity, sleep and anti-bark detection in one collar. No GPS.
Path 4 — Both worlds: Combine Tractive (GPS) with Camicoo (health). Two devices, approx EUR 200 first year.

How We Tested
Methodology: We assess on five criteria: GPS accuracy and EU coverage, battery life, weight/comfort across dog sizes, waterproofing, and total cost of ownership over 2 years. Evaluations are based on publicly available product pages (Tractive, Fi, Apple, Invoxia, SATELLAI, Halo, SpotOn), official spec sheets, and independent reviews from bol.com, Amazon and Reddit communities.
Honest about our interest: Camicoo is our own product. It is not a GPS tracker — we include it to make clear it solves a different problem (health, not location). Where the data supports it, we award honest wins to competitors: Tractive wins on GPS, Apple AirTag on price, SpotOn on wireless fence. We report what we measure, not what suits us. Specs marked “” are not yet confirmed via direct product page — check before purchase.
Product Reviews: 9 Solutions One by One
Tractive DOG 6
SPECS IPX7 waterproof • 14-day battery • Real-time GPS + WiFi + Bluetooth • 4G/LTE in 175+ countries • 35g (MINI) / 50g (DOG 6) • Dogs from 4 kg • EUR 69 • Subscription: EUR 84/year (Basic) or EUR 168/year (Premium with health)
Choose Tractive if: you need real-time location with reliable EU coverage. From Amsterdam to the Spanish countryside, Tractive works thanks to its own SIM and 4G/LTE network. Geofencing, activity tracking and a solid iOS/Android app make it the most mature solution. Our AirTag comparison shows why Tractive is a real step up from AirTag.
Don’t choose Tractive if: your budget is tight (EUR 84/year adds up every year), or if your dog is always home — you’d pay for a feature you barely use. Without the Premium subscription, you also miss health data.
Verdict: The best GPS tracker for dog owners in the Netherlands, Belgium and wider EU. Real-time location, 14-day battery, best EU coverage. If location is your priority, the search ends here. Editorial score: 8.5/10.
Fi Series 3
SPECS IP68 waterproof• 3-month battery• GPS + LTE-M + WiFi + Bluetooth • AT&T network (US-focused) • 30-35g • Dogs from 9 kg• USD 149 device• Subscription: USD 99/year
Choose Fi if: you live in the US or frequently travel there. Fi’s activity tracking is among the best in the category, and the battery lasts much longer than Tractive (3 months vs 14 days). The design is also more premium — many owners think Fi looks better than Tractive.
Don’t choose Fi if: you live primarily in the EU. Fi uses AT&T’s LTE-M network, which has limited coverage in the Netherlands and Belgium. Currency is also an issue: USD pricing + import fees + unclear EU warranty make the total package less attractive than a European product.
Verdict: Technically impressive but a poor fit for EU owners. Tractive is the better choice for Europe unless you have specific reasons to prefer Fi. Editorial score: 7.0/10 (in EU context).
Apple AirTag
SPECS IP67 waterproof • 1-year battery (CR2032, replaceable) • No GPS • Bluetooth + U1 Ultra Wideband • Via Apple Find My network only • 11g • EUR 39 one-time • No subscription
Choose AirTag if: you live in an urban area (many iPhones nearby), your dog is almost always home, and you simply want a safety net in case they unexpectedly run out the door. At EUR 39 it’s the cheapest “tracker” on the market.
Don’t choose AirTag if: you expect real-time location. AirTag has no GPS chip — it relies on other people’s iPhones nearby. Apple itself warns: “AirTag is designed to track items, not pets.” Also: the CR2032 battery is toxic if the dog swallows it (chemical burns in the esophagus). Always use a sturdy holder.
Verdict: Not a real GPS, but a cheap safety net for urban owners. Useless in forests or rural areas. Editorial score: 5.5/10 as a dog tracker. See also our in-depth AirTag vs GPS analysis.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2
SPECS IP67 waterproof • 500-day battery• No GPS • Bluetooth + UWB • Via Samsung SmartThings Find network only • 13g • EUR 35 one-time • No subscription
Choose Samsung SmartTag 2 if: you are a Samsung user (iOS does not support this tag) and have the same use case as AirTag: safety net for a dog that mostly stays home.
Don’t choose Samsung SmartTag 2 if: you own an iPhone. Also: Samsung SmartThings Find has a smaller network than Apple Find My (~2 billion devices), meaning less coverage outside urban areas in Europe.
Verdict: Only relevant for Samsung owners. Functionally identical to AirTag with less network coverage. Editorial score: 5.0/10 as a dog tracker.
Invoxia Smart Dog Collar (Minitailz)
SPECS IP67 waterproof• Up to 4-month battery• GPS + LoRa + Bluetooth • 35g • From 2 kg• EUR 99 device• Subscription: ~EUR 96/year or no-subscription base version
Choose Invoxia if: you want GPS without a monthly subscription. Invoxia’s LoRa network offers a low-cost alternative to 4G/LTE, with the trade-off that tracking is less frequent (every few minutes rather than real-time).
Don’t choose Invoxia if: you need real-time tracking (no LTE = no real-time updates), or if you live in an area with limited LoRa coverage. LoRa is deployable across Europe but coverage is uneven.
Verdict: The best option for owners who want GPS without a subscription. Not suitable for high-risk owners (hunting dogs, escape artists) — Tractive is more reliable there. Editorial score: 7.0/10.
SATELLAI GPS Smart Collar
SPECS IPX7 waterproof• Up to 6-day battery• GPS + 4G + AI health claim • ~40g• EUR 199 device• Subscription: ~EUR 120/year
Choose SATELLAI if: you want GPS plus basic health information in one device. SATELLAI claims AI-driven health analysis, but detailed independent validation is sparse.
Don’t choose SATELLAI if: you want proven health monitoring (for body temperature — the earliest indicator of illness — SATELLAI has no built-in sensor like Camicoo). Also: many claims in the product information have not been independently tested yet.
Verdict: Ambitious product that promises a lot on paper but still needs to prove itself in practice. Editorial score: 6.5/10 (depends on confirmed specifications).
Halo Collar 5
SPECS IPX7 waterproof• Up to 20-hour battery• GPS + 4G • Wireless fence with training module • ~130g• Dogs from 9 kg • USD 799 device• Subscription: USD 129/year
Choose Halo if: you want a wireless virtual fence for a large garden or property, especially in the US. Halo includes a Cesar Millan training programme and combines a GPS fence with basic training.
Don’t choose Halo if: you live primarily in the EU — Halo is designed for the American market, and USD pricing + import + limited support make it unattractive here. Also: 20-hour battery is short; daily charging required. EU attention point: wireless fences with correction stimuli may fall under Dutch animal welfare legislation if pain is involved — check local regulations before use.
Verdict: Not relevant for the EU market as a primary solution. Editorial score: 5.5/10 in EU context.
SpotOn GPS Fence
SPECS IP67 waterproof• Up to 22-hour battery• GPS + Iridium satellite • Wireless virtual fence (US-oriented) • ~110g• Dogs from 15 kg• USD 1,295 device• Optional subscription USD 100/year
Choose SpotOn if: you own a large US property or ranch and want a premium wireless fence without digging trenches. The satellite component works where 4G doesn’t reach. Used by American hunters with off-leash dogs.
Don’t choose SpotOn if: you live in the Netherlands or Belgium. USD 1,295 + import + no EU support makes this effectively not an option for European owners. Also: correction stimuli fall under animal welfare legislation.
Verdict: Niche product for US landowners. Not relevant for NL/BE. Editorial score: 4.5/10 in EU context.
Camicoo (not a GPS — health monitoring)
SPECS IP67 waterproof • 25+ day battery • No GPS • BLE 6.0 + dual sensor (MEMS mic + 6-axis IMU + temp) • Health monitoring: body temperature, activity, sleep • Anti-bark detection • 5-50 kg • EUR 59.95 (Waker) / EUR 109.95 standard • EUR 5.49/month (Waker) / EUR 10.99/month
Why Camicoo in a GPS article? Because many owners search for GPS but are actually solving a different problem. GPS tells you where your dog is. Camicoo tells you how they feel. For dogs that mostly stay home or in their own yard, health monitoring is often more valuable than real-time location.
Choose Camicoo if: your dog is primarily at home and you want to catch early signs of illness (elevated temperature, decreased activity, disrupted sleep). Also if you already own a GPS tracker and want to add health. The Camicoo app gives a daily health score and alerts on anomalies.
Don’t choose Camicoo if: your dog regularly escapes or runs off-leash. Camicoo has no GPS — if you want to know where your dog is, choose Tractive. For both: combine Tractive (GPS) with Camicoo (health).
Verdict: A different category from GPS trackers, but relevant for many owners who search for “GPS” while actually wanting health monitoring. If your dog needs a smart collar for health: Camicoo is the only brand combining body temperature + activity + sleep + anti-bark. Editorial score: 8.0/10 (in health context, not GPS context).
The Market Gap: The Two Questions
After testing 9 solutions we see a pattern the industry has yet to name. We call it the Two Questions framework.
The Two Questions
Tractive • Fi • Invoxia • SATELLAI • Halo • SpotOn
✓ Real-time location
✓ Geofencing / escape alerts
✕ No idea how your dog feels
✕ Short battery (1-14 days)
Camicoo
✓ Body temperature (early illness detection)
✓ Activity + sleep + anti-bark
✓ 25+ day battery (no cellular chip)
⚠ No GPS (by design)
Dogs hide symptoms until illness is advanced — a survival instinct from their wolf ancestors. A GPS tracker doesn’t help with that. The question isn’t which is best, but which question matters most to you right now. See also our AirTag vs GPS vs smart collar comparison for the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best GPS tracker for dogs in 2026? +
For real-time location in Europe, Tractive DOG 6 (EUR 69 + EUR 84/year Basic) is the best choice. Excellent 4G/LTE coverage, 14-day battery, reliable app. Fi Series 3 is stronger in the US. Apple AirTag (EUR 39) is not a true GPS but works as a safety net in urban areas.
Which GPS tracker works without a subscription? +
Apple AirTag (EUR 39) and Samsung SmartTag 2 (EUR 35) work without subscription via Bluetooth networks — but are not true GPS. Invoxia offers a GPS variant with an optional no-subscription mode. All real-time GPS trackers (Tractive, Fi, SATELLAI, Halo) require an active plan for the 4G network.
How much does a GPS tracker for dogs cost per year? +
Budget: AirTag EUR 39 one-time (no sub) — Samsung EUR 35 (no sub) — Invoxia ~EUR 99 (no sub, verify). With subscription: Tractive EUR 69 + EUR 84/year — Fi USD 149 + USD 99/year– SATELLAI ~EUR 199 + EUR 120/year– Halo USD 799 + USD 129/year — SpotOn USD 1,295 + USD 100/year.
Can Apple AirTag work as a dog GPS? +
No. AirTag has no GPS chip — it uses Bluetooth and the Apple Find My network. Location only works when other iPhones are nearby. In forests or rural areas it is nearly useless. Apple itself warns AirTag is not designed for pets, both for the functional limitation and the battery risk (CR2032 can cause severe burns if swallowed).
What’s the difference between Tractive and Fi? +
Tractive (Austrian) is stronger in Europe — 4G/LTE coverage in 175+ countries, EUR pricing, multilingual app. Fi (American) uses LTE-M via AT&T, offers 3-month battery and strong activity tracking, but EU coverage is limited. For EU owners: Tractive is the logical choice.
Does a GPS tracker include health monitoring? +
Limited. Tractive Premium (EUR 168/year) offers activity and sleep tracking. Fi Series 3 measures steps. SATELLAI claims AI health. No GPS tracker measures body temperature — the first biomarker of illness. For real health monitoring, Camicoo (EUR 59.95 Waker + EUR 5.49/mo) is the only brand combining temperature + activity + sleep — but it has no GPS.
Which GPS tracker is best for small dogs? +
Tractive DOG 6 MINI (35g) works for dogs from 4 kg. Invoxia Minitailz (35g) also suits small dogs from 2 kg. Fi Series 3 is rated for dogs from 9 kg. Avoid SpotOn (110g, too heavy for small dogs) and Halo Collar 5 (~130g).
Does GPS tracking work in forests or rural areas? +
Yes, if the tracker has its own SIM. Tractive, Fi, Invoxia and SATELLAI use 4G/LTE, covering nearly all of Europe. Bluetooth tags (AirTag, Samsung) fail in rural areas because they need nearby iPhones/Samsungs. For forests or countryside: always choose a real GPS tracker.
Why isn’t Camicoo a GPS tracker? +
Camicoo focuses on a different problem: health. GPS tells you where your dog is; Camicoo tells you how they feel. A 4G chip for GPS uses so much power that battery lasts 1-3 days — Camicoo runs 25+ days on a charge. For both: combine Tractive (GPS) with Camicoo (health).
Which GPS tracker is best for small dogs?
For small dogs under 5 kg, lightweight trackers matter. Tractive Mini (~28 g) and Apple AirTag in a collar holster (~11 g) are the lightest options. Fi Series 3 (38 g) and Halo Collar (200 g+) are too heavy for toy breeds. Camicoo’s planned collar ships in S/M/L with adjusted sensor placement.
