Quick Summary
Quick summary: An Apple AirTag is not a GPS tracker and Apple officially warns against using it for pets. The AirTag only tells you where your dog was last seen — and only if an iPhone was nearby. For reliable dog tracking, choose Tractive DOG 6 (real-time GPS, EUR 69 + EUR 84/year). Want to know how your dog is doing instead of where it is? Choose Camicoo (health monitoring + anti-bark detection, EUR 59.95 + EUR 65.88/year as Waker).
An AirTag costs less (EUR 39 one-time), but offers no real-time location, no geofencing, and no health insights. The battery is a proven choking hazard for dogs.

Why Not an AirTag for Your Dog?
The AirTag is popular as a dog tracker because of its low price (EUR 39) and the convenience of the Apple ecosystem. But there are three fundamental problems. Looking for a full overview of smart collars instead? Read our comparison of 9 smart dog collars.
1. No real GPS
An AirTag has no GPS chip. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy and depends on the Apple Find My network — other iPhones nearby. In a city park, this works reasonably well. But in a forest, on the beach, or in the countryside where few iPhones are present? It can take hours before you get a location update. Or not at all.
The Bluetooth range is about 10-15 meters. Beyond that range, you’re entirely dependent on passersby with an iPhone.
2. Apple officially warns against it
Apple VP Kianne Drance stated at launch: “AirTag is designed to track items, not people or pets.” (source: MacRumors). Apple has never revised this position — not even with the AirTag 2 in January 2026.
⚠
Safety Risk: Battery
The CR2032 lithium battery in an AirTag is a proven hazard for dogs. If a dog swallows the battery, it can cause severe chemical burns in the esophagus or stomach. A veterinarian in Louisiana treated 6 dogs that swallowed AirTags in 18 months.
In January 2025, Apple updated the warning labels due to tightened safety standards. Dogs that chew on their collar are at extra risk.
If swallowed: go to the vet immediately. Time is critical.
3. No health insights
An AirTag only tracks location (via Bluetooth). It cannot measure temperature, activity, sleep patterns, or barking behavior. If you want to know how your dog is doing — not just where — you need a smart collar. Learn more about why health monitoring for dogs is just getting started.

Take the Free QuizApple AirTag 2
Specs: 11 grams, IP67 water resistant, CR2032 battery (~12 months), Bluetooth + UWB + Find My network. Price: EUR 39 (one-time).
Good for: Dog owners who want a cheap, simple tracker as a backup solution. Works best in urban areas with many iPhone users. Handy as a backup on a sturdy collar holder.
Not for: Dogs that chew on their collar (battery risk). Dogs that roam off-leash in forests or rural areas (no coverage). Owners who want real-time location, geofencing, or health insights.
Verdict: The cheapest option, but with serious limitations. No GPS, no health data, and a safety risk that Apple itself acknowledges. If you spend EUR 39 and your dog escapes in the countryside, you have nothing to show for it.
Tractive DOG 6
Specs: 35 grams, IPX7 water resistant, rechargeable battery (14 days), real-time GPS + WiFi + LTE. Price: EUR 69 + EUR 84/year (Basic) or EUR 168/year (Premium with health).
Good for: Dog owners who want reliable real-time GPS. Geofencing alerts you when your dog leaves a zone. Premium adds basic heart rate and activity tracking. Available on Amazon EU.
Not for: Owners who only want health monitoring without GPS (you’re paying for tracking you don’t need). The Premium version (EUR 168/year) is expensive for limited health features.
Verdict: The best GPS tracker for dogs in the EU. Reliable, affordable, and with the best coverage thanks to 4G/LTE. If location is your priority, Tractive is the winner.
Camicoo
Specs: ~40 grams, IP67 water resistant, rechargeable battery (25+ days), health monitoring (temperature, activity, sleep) + AI bark detection (dual-sensor: MEMS microphone + 6-axis IMU). Price: EUR 59.95 + EUR 5.49/month as Waker (first 500 spots).
Good for: Dog owners who want to know how their dog is doing. Early illness detection via temperature and activity patterns. Managing barking without shock. Dogs that are mostly at home or on-leash (no GPS needed).
Not for: Owners who need real-time GPS tracking. Camicoo does not track location — it monitors health and behavior.
Verdict: The only collar that combines health monitoring AND anti-bark detection. No shock, no spray — vibration and tone only. It screens for anxiety before applying correction. The Waker price (EUR 59.95 + EUR 5.49/month) makes it the most affordable smart collar on the market.
The Three Choices: Location vs Health vs Behavior
The dog technology market has a fundamental distinction that most comparisons miss. There are not two, but three categories:
WHERE is my dog?
AirTag / GPS Tracker
Location tracking
HOW is my dog doing?
Smart collar (Camicoo)
Health monitoring
WHY does my dog bark?
Anti-bark collar (Camicoo)
Behavior analysis
Each problem requires a different product. An AirTag solves a location problem (partially). A GPS tracker solves it better. But if your dog barks while you’re away, or if you want to detect health problems early, no tracker will help. Also read: which smart collar is right for your dog?
Camicoo is the only collar that combines health monitoring (HOW) and bark detection (WHY) in a single device. No other product on the market does both.
Total Cost of Ownership (3 Years)
The cheapest purchase isn’t always the cheapest choice. Here’s how the three options compare over 3 years:
| Product | Device | Per year | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | 3-Year Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirTag 2 | EUR 39 | ~EUR 4 (battery) | ~EUR 43 | ~EUR 4 | ~EUR 4 | ~EUR 51 |
| Camicoo (Waker) | EUR 59.95 | EUR 65.88 | EUR 126 | EUR 66 | EUR 66 | EUR 258 |
| Tractive DOG 6 | EUR 69 | EUR 84 (Basic) | EUR 153 | EUR 84 | EUR 84 | EUR 321 |
The nuance: An AirTag is by far the cheapest, but you’re comparing apples to oranges. An AirTag offers no real-time tracking, no geofencing, and no health data. If your dog escapes and there’s no iPhone nearby, you’ve bought a EUR 39 keychain.
Camicoo on Waker pricing (EUR 258/3 years) offers health monitoring + anti-bark detection for EUR 63 less than Tractive GPS (EUR 321/3 years). Tractive is the better choice if location is your priority.
